Native plantings encourage outdoor education and food awareness at Valley Natural Foods (VNF), located in Burnsville, a suburb of Minneapolis, MN. Working with the Co-Op to promote the wellness of its stakeholders, Minnesota’s native plants and agricultural history inspired this space. The landscape design supports the health and well-being of the South Twin Cities Metro community by creating inviting outdoor areas that foster a deeper relationship between people and plants. The main entrance disguises the size of the building through a balanced façade planting as it welcomes community members to the co-op. An outdoor courtyard located at the south entrance provides a space for both relaxation and education. Surrounded by native plants, the area promotes an understanding of Minnesota’s biomes, pollinator communities, and the importance of soil health in sustainable agricultural practices. It also serves as an outdoor classroom, or a great place to enjoy lunch!
